A Small Castle With a Complicated Past
Paphos Castle looks simple today, but its history is anything but simple.
A Byzantine fortress originally protected the harbour. After medieval earthquakes and centuries of conflict, the fortifications were rebuilt by the Lusignans during the 13th century.
Then came an unusual decision.
In 1570, as an Ottoman invasion of Cyprus approached, the Venetians dismantled the castle themselves. Rather than allow an invading army to capture a ready-made defensive position, they chose to make it unusable.
The Ottomans conquered Cyprus anyway.
They later rebuilt the fortress, and much of the castle you see today comes from the Ottoman restoration of 1592. An inscription above the entrance still records that reconstruction.
The roof was designed with 12 battlements for 12 cannons, turning this small building into a serious defensive position controlling the harbour entrance.
